The Honorable Michael Montelongo, a career soldier and Army Airborne Ranger, a former presidential appointee and Senate-confirmed public official, and corporate executive is a board governance and audit committee financial expert serving on several commercial, public-sector, and non-profit boards including Herbalife Ltd, Larry H. Miller Group of Companies, Exostar LLC, Aerospace Corporation, and Leadership Roundtable.

A National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD) Board Leadership Fellow and a NACD, Equilar, and Inside America’s Boardrooms speaker and panelist, Mr. Montelongo is a NACD Board Advisory Services faculty member bringing board governance and c-level experience to boardrooms. With a broad service industry skill set in facilities and food service management, outsourced technical services, telecommunications, professional services, and aerospace/defense, including government service in the military, the U.S. Senate, the Pentagon, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), he focuses on strategy, financial and risk management (including cyber-risk), policymaking, and operations excellence for global commercial and public sector enterprises; he is recognized for leading change in large organizations. A public policy expert, Mr. Montelongo is a lifetime member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Corporate Highlights – Mr. Montelongo is president and chief executive officer of GRC Advisory Services, LLC, a private firm specializing in board governance, risk management, and compliance matters for private, public, and social sector organizations.  He is also a senior advisor at leadershipForward, a premier leadership performance firm serving Fortune 500 and small business clients. Most recently, he served as chief administrative officer and senior vice president, public policy and corporate affairs and previously, as chief strategy officer for Sodexo, Inc., the leading $9 billion, 133,000-person quality of life services enterprise in North America where he had corporate P&L responsibility for a nation-wide, multi-brand chain of 570 fast-casual restaurants and served as the company’s senior military veteran.  Previously, Mr. Montelongo was an executive with a global management consulting firm and a regional telecommunications company.

Government Highlights – Mr. Montelongo was a Pentagon appointee in the Bush White House.  As the 19th assistant secretary of the Air Force for Financial Management and Comptroller, he served as its chief financial officer responsible for managing a budget of over $120 billion and financing two major combat operations. After concluding his tenure at the Pentagon as acting secretary of the Air Force, Mr. Montelongo served for nine years on the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Advisory Council.

Military Highlights – Michael completed a career in the U.S. Army that included line and staff assignments, a Congressional Fellowship in the U.S. Senate, a tour as special assistant to the Army Chief of Staff, and service as an assistant professor teaching economics and political science at West Point.

Civic Highlights and Awards – Active in civic leadership, he volunteers for organizations that expand opportunities for young people, support community health and wellness, assist veterans, and promote national service.  Besides military and corporate awards and the highest decorations for Exceptional Civilian Service in the Air Force and NASA, he is featured in several nationally-recognized Latino publications; NACD Directorship profiled him in its Board Fellow Spotlight feature.
